PROFILE OF HON. SAA EMERSON LAMINA
Parliamentary Chairman, Committee on Mines and Mineral Resources.
Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina hails from the diamond-rich Kono District in Eastern Sierra Leone. Rising from humble beginnings as an artisanal mine boy, he has grown to become one of the most influential political figures in his region and a respected voice in Sierra Leone’s national and regional governance.
Hon. Lamina holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics (B.A.Ed), and double Masters in various spheres of social and development studies making him a Development Educationist from Njala University.
He is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental Development Studies at Njala University, Sierra Leone.
His post-university career began in academia, where he briefly lectured at the Milton Margai College of Education & Technology (MMCET) and the Government Technical Institute (GTI) in Freetown. He later served as Personnel Manager for a local mining company in Kono District.
Hon. Lamina's dedication to public service extended into local governance, where he was appointed Deputy Chief Administrator of the Kono District Council in 2008. Concurrently, he continued to provide voluntary academic support at various tertiary distance education centers. He also played a key role in the coordination of the Cause Canada Regional Peace Building Project, which aimed to integrate women and youth into the peace-building and governance processes in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire.
On November 17, 2012, he entered national politics when he was democratically elected as the youngest Mayor in West Africa, serving the Koidu Municipality. His tenure was marked by significant development strides and effective leadership, earning him a reputation as one of Kono District’s most promising and accomplished young leaders.
Currently, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina serves as the Deputy Leader 2 of Government Business in Parliament and the elected Member of Parliament for Cluster 030 in Kono District. He is the Parliamentary Chairman of the Mines and Mineral Resources Committee, a recipient of multiple parliamentary awards, and formerly represented Sierra Leone in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP)/European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly.
He currently serves as a Member of Delegation of the ECOWAS Parliament and Vice Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee on Energy and Mines. In recognition of his outstanding public service, he was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel (GCOR), one of Sierra Leone’s highest national honours in 2022.
Hon. Lamina is married to Mrs. Hannah Lamina, a proud Southerner, and together they reside in both Kono and Freetown with their children.
